As an introduction to this blog, let me explain why I've chosen the title I have.
Lawyer, Philosopher and Geek nicely sums up both my university study and my viewpoints on life. In terms of my university studies, I have completed: a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Computer Science; a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Philosophy and Religious Studies; a Graduate Diploma in Legal Studies, majoring in Government and Administrative law; a Bachelor of Laws, with no specific major; and a Master of Laws, majoring in Legal Practice.
I have worked professionally as both an IT specialist and as a lawyer, in addition to considerable experience as a small business owner/manager and as a government office worker. I cannot claim to have worked as a professional philosopher - but I suspect there aren't very many people who can. I do hope this blog will go somewhat to addressing the current shortfall in my philosophical output. I have done some fiction and poetry writing, and even had a small amount of very average poetry published in a local (regional) newspaper. I may get around to reinstating the online repository of my fiction writing one day, but don't expect to see fictional works in this blog. That is a special form of torture that I'll reserve for a different forum.
What I do envisage covering in this blog will be general comments on life, politics, the communications and IT industry, and possibly a bit of science and technology too. This will almost certainly be from an Australian perspective, since that is where I live, but hopefully it will be of some value elsewhere. I do not think Australia is so different from the rest of the world that the issues we have here are unique.
I hope that gives you some insight into my background, and perhaps might even lend some small amount of credibility to my future entries in this blog. If not, so be it - I don't claim to be the best, most insightful, or cleverest lawyer, philosopher or geek on the planet.
If you like one of my blog entries, please leave a comment to let me know you've read it and liked it. If you don't like an entry, please also leave a comment - provided its civilised, it will be approved for display. If its well argued counter-argument, that's even better - its only through the open-minded discussion of ideas that we can all learn to understand each other better.
